Whilst this may seem like a distant premiere, the confirmation of the release date and first teaser means that the production team are finally about to start what (should be) an adrenaline-pumping promotional campaign.
The preview trailer shows Katrina Kaif, who plays Zoya Humaini, practising her knife-fighting skills with a group of stunt coordinators.
She then goes over to Salman Khan, aka Avinash Singh ‘Tiger’ Rathore, who is busy enjoying a quick mid-stunt nap. Kaif asks whether Khan is ready, to which he replies “A Tiger is always ready.”
Alongside confirmation of an April 21st, 2023 premiere, the caption for the teaser video also revealed that the movie will release with Hindi, Tamil and Telugu languages available.
Third time’s the charm
The upcoming Tiger movie will obviously be the third movie in the franchise, following on from Ek Tha Tiger (2012) and Tiger Zinda Hai (2017).
The first movie, Ek Tha Tiger, premiered in August 2012 to a fabulous reception with fans of epic Indian cinema. The film had the biggest opening day and weekend for any movie of its time; earning Rs 33.5 crore ($4.4 million) and Rs 57.9 crore ($7.7 million), respectively.
Ek Tha Tiger would gross a total of Rs 320 Crore ($42 million), making it the highest-grossing Bollywood project of 2012 and the second highest-grossing Bollywood movie of all time behind 3 Idiots (2009).
However, the film was not as widely loved as these numbers suggest, with many reviews being less-than-stellar. The film scored a 5.6/10 on IMDB and just 49% average audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
The sequel film, Tiger Zina Hai, released in theatres in December 2017 to a similarly impressive box office collection. The film reportedly earned Rs 34.1 Crore on its opening day, rising to an incredible Rs 569 Crore ($87 million) for its lifetime earnings.
This made Tiger Zina Hai the second highest-grossing opening weekend in Indian cinema history and the highest opening weekend for a Bollywood film.
The film would also win the Best Action movie at the 2018 Filmfare Awards, as well as Best Cinematography and Best Sound Design at the IIFA Awards.
A new addition to the Tiger team
Despite Tiger 3 not launching until April 2023, fans can look forward to some new faces joining the production team.
Whilst fans should expect the likes of Girish Karnad (Shenoy) and Gavie Chahal (Captain Abrar) to return for the third instalment, we should also see the return of Ranvir Shorey as Gopi – who was notably absent from the second film.
The team will be joined by Emraan Hashmi, who is set to play the film’s villain – a man called Kamal Fateh Mir, who also goes by the nickname ‘Lion’.
For the third time in a row, the movie will be produced by Aditya Chopra (Befikre). However, yet another new director will take the reins; with Maneesh Sharma taking over from Kabir Khan (Ek Tha Tiger) and Ali Abbas Zafar (Tiger Zinda Hai).
