‘The Office’ Cast Once Staged a Fight at the SAG Awards After-Party; Why Nobody Believed It
The Office cast is notorious for getting along with each other. They got along so well, Jenna Fischer, Angela Kinsey, and a few others grew tired of people assuming there was any animosity. One year at the SAG Awards after-party, the cast of The Office decided to give the public a taste of what they thought the cast’s relationship was really like — they staged a fight. Fischer explains why no one believed the act.
‘The Office’ cast maintain their relationship
If you’ve ever watched The Office, you might think it’s strange for such a large cast to have a strong bond, but the fact is the people who starred in the NBC comedy series are a tight-knit group. Even now, almost 10 years after the show wrapped, the cast still keeps in touch.
Fischer and Kinsey’s podcast, Office Ladies, has helped keep the group intact. What’s more, Brian Baumgartner’s two podcasts about the show, An Oral History of The Office and The Office Deep Dive, have brought the cast back together in more ways than one. Baumgartner and company have even teased the idea of an Office cast reunion, but that remains to be seen.
They may not get to see each other often, but the Office cast keeps in communication. As Ed Helms said on an episode of the Office Ladies podcast, most of them are still on a text chain together.
“The friendships that have endured, I mean, I can’t believe we’re all still on a text chain,” Helms said. “That blows my mind. And I just I love that so much. Sometimes [the texts are] funny and sometimes they’re just like information or news or whatever, but it just [sic] speaks to — why the show has endured the way it has is because the camaraderie was real.”
Jenna Fischer recalls a staged cast fight in her ‘Office’ book
Fischer and Kinsey’s book The Office BFFs: Tales of The Office from Two Best Friends Who Were There details many behind-the-scenes stories from their time on the show, including this staged fight. “We’d been joking about how no one believed that our cast were actually all friends in real life and that our show was drama-free,” Fischer writes. At the time, rumors about other casts fighting, including Desperate Housewives and Grey’s Anatomy, were popular.
Fischer says journalists would corner Office stars on red carpets and try to dig up stories about an argument among them. This is what inspired them to stage one.
“We were joking that we should stage a huge fight just to see what would happen,” Fischer continued. “So we did [at a SAG Awards after party].”
In the end, “nothing happened. No one believed it.” Fischer includes photos in the book of the faux argument, which shows cast members like B.J. Novak, Kate Flannery, Fischer, and Kinsey giving their best angry looks to each other. In reality, they all look like they’re having a great time.
