It has been almost 20 years since the Oscar award-winning Lord of the Rings movie trilogy featuring Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen, and Liv Tyler first debuted in 2001. The trilogy is composed of The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King.
Considered a modern classic, fans everywhere continue to watch the series every year. In fact, a poll released in 2019 discovered that The Lord of the Rings is now even more popular than Star Wars! Certainly, Disney would love to get their hands on such a hot property, if not for the Tolkien estate doing what it can to preserve the integrity of the franchise. Even so, The Lord of the Rings will be getting a new show on Amazon Prime in 2021.

What order should I watch The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogy?
Another question we are often asked is what order should I watch The Lord of the Rings. It’s actually quite an interesting decision since The Hobbit added 3 new movies to the franchise.
If you plan on watching both The Hobbit trilogy and The Lord of the Rings trilogy, take caution to the order you watch the films. The Hobbit series takes place chronologically before The Fellowship of the Ring; however, the series has a lot of foreshadowing and spoilers that can take away from The Lord of the Rings experience. Additionally, the series has a lot of easter eggs that are meant to be enjoyed after watching The Lord of the Rings. For that reason, if you plan on watching The Hobbit, we recommend the following viewing order.
Watch order for The Lord of the Rings series and The Hobbit:
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug
The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
That being said, The Hobbit is not necessary to enjoy the greatness of The Lord of the Rings trilogy. While I personally enjoyed the entire series, not everyone is fond of The Hobbit adaptation. There’s no right or wrong way to watch The Lord of the Rings, so feel free to watch it however you please.
