For an Oscars warm-up act, Saturday night’s Directors Guild of America Awards recognized the outstanding directorial achievements in everything from film and television to documentaries and commercials in 2018. The evening’s weather was rather unpleasant thanks to heavy rainfall in Los Angeles, but the red carpet still proved to be yet another glamorous stop on what feels like a never-ending awards trail.
Constance Wu kept up her experimental streak with a twinkling and feather-trimmed, off-the-shoulder Miu Miu Gown, which she jazzed up with a bright red lip and a simple, velvet choker. Sarah Paulson went an equally f route with a shimmery, cut-out Prada dress in metallic blue and a matte lilac lip. The statement lip trend continued with Helen Mirren, who arrived wearing a hot-pink lipstick to match her hot-pink Roger Vivier stilettos. The industry vet pulled off the playful shade by wearing a structured Brandon Maxwell pantsuit in black.
Octavia Spencer and Keri Russell took a less experimental and more elegant sartorial path in form-flattering black lace frocks. Similarly, Laura Harrier brought the class in an all-black, floor-grazing, strapless Brandon Maxwell gown with a satin bodice, which she lightly accessorized with dangling Bulgari earrings.
