Just when we thought we’d binged watched everything new on Netflix, the streaming giant is set to release at least 72 movies in 2021 — that’s at least one new release each week.
Included in that monster lineup of original films is “Don’t Look Up” staring Louisville-born actress and Academy Award winner Jennifer Lawrence (“The Hunger Games,” “Silver Linings Playbook” and “American Hustle”) along with another Academy Award winner Leonardo DiCaprio, (“The Revenant,” and “The Wolf of Wall Street.”)
The film tells the story of two low-level astronomers (Lawrence and DiCaprio) who discover an asteroid on a path to destroy the Earth. When they begin to speak publicly about the danger, they find that no one will take their warnings of impending doom seriously, including the president of the United States — played by Academy Award winner Meryl Streep (“The Iron Lady”).
Describing the movie to late-night talk show host Stephen Colbert, Streep said “Don’t Look Up” is “about a global catastrophe, but it’s sort of funny, like ‘Dr. Strangelove’ for 2020.”
Along with Streep, DiCaprio and Lawrence — who is a redhead in the flick — the cast of the film reads like a “who’s who” of Hollywood hotshots.
“Don’t Look Up” also stars Timothée Chalamet (“Little Women”), Cate Blanchett (“Carol”), Chris Evans (“Captain America”), Jonah Hill (“The Wolf of Wall Street), Rob Morgan (“Mudbound”) Tyler Perry (“Gone Girl”), Ron Perlman (“Sons of Anarchy”), Melanie Lynskey(“Togetherness”) and Himesh Patel (“Yesterday”).
Also making appearances in the comedy are Matthew Perry (“Friends”), Tomer Sisley (“We’re the Millers”), singer Ariana Grande and rapper Kid Cudi.
The sci-fi comedy is written and directed by Adam McKay (“Anchorman,” “Vice” and “The Big Short”) and is being filmed in Boston.
Due to the global coronavirus pandemic, filming of “Don’t Look Up” was delayed back in April and so was the movie’s release date. While an official date has not been announced, the film is due to show up on Netflix later in 2021.
