LA Metro is proud to confirm that Los Angeles Union Station will be hosting part of the 93rd Academy Awards on Sunday, April 25, 2021.
This morning the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the selection of Union Station to host part of the awards show, celebrating the highest honors in filmmaking while highlighting the importance and beauty of what is widely regarded as “the last of the great train stations.”
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences sought out Union Station for a combination of its historic and iconic nature and for the landmark building’s ability to accommodate a safe and healthy event that meets COVID-19 health guidelines.
The event will take place in Union Station West in the Historic Ticketing Hall, the Grand Waiting Room, the North and South Patios and the Main Entrance along Alameda Street.
Union Station will remain open to transit riders throughout the awards events and riders will be able to access all bus, rail, Metrolink, Amtrak and private transportation providers, along with vendors. Alternative waiting accommodations for Metrolink and Amtrak riders will be provided. Signs throughout Union Station will help visitors navigate to transportation and parking options. During closures, customers will be able to access transit services through Union Station East.
We’re working hard to minimize disruptions around Union Station and we don’t expect any bus or rail closures due to the event.
We’ll have more specific details to share on event-related impacts in the near future.
Union Station was built in 1939 and has been featured in numerous films during its storied history, including The Way We Were, Blade Runner, Speed, Pearl Harbor, Catch Me If You Can and The Dark Knight Rises. Its signature Mission Moderne architectural style makes it one of America’s greatest examples of the golden age of rails.
In 1972, Union Station was designated as a Los Angeles Historic–Cultural Monument and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. Metro purchased Union Station in 2011 and has managed it since.
In addition to being an iconic landmark and transportation hub, Union Station has continued to host numerous unique events, cutting-edge performances, evocative music, unprecedented art exhibitions and other cultural programming.
“Union Station is one of the most iconic landmarks in Los Angeles County and we are honored for it to be highlighted at the 93rd Academy Awards,” said Metro CEO Phillip A. Washington. “We look forward to helping celebrate excellence in film in a safe and healthy manner while still ensuring that our transit riders can reach their essential destinations.”
