The newest movie from Disney and Pixar, Soul, premieres on Disney+ today, Friday, December 25. It was originally supposed to come to movie theaters in November but, given the Coronavirus pandemic, will now come straight to the streaming platform.
Joe Gardner (voiced by Jamie Foxx) is a middle-school band teacher. His life is about to change quite dramatically, starting with him getting a once in a lifetime opportunity to play at the best jazz club in town. One misstep and Joe will find himself up and out of New York City and into The Great Before.
Here, he’ll discover the place where new souls go to get their personalities, quirks and interests before they go to Earth. But this isn’t the place for him to be, and he’s determined to get back home. Along the way he’ll meet a soul, 22 (voiced by Tina Fey), who just doesn’t get why the human experience is so great, and Joe will try to show her.
Soul is directed by Academy Award winner Pete Docter of Inside Out and Up, and co-directed by Kemp Powers of One Night in Miami. It’s produced by Academy Award nominee Dana Murray, p.g.a. of Pixar short “Lou.”
