GREENFIELD — The movies of Academy Award winning director Martin Scorsese will be showcased during a month-long salutel at the Greenfield Garden Cinemas in September.
The film festival, which kicks off on Sept. 1 and runs through Sept. 29, will spotlight 14 movies. It is sponsored by TD Bank and the Massachusetts Cultural Council through the auspices of the Greenfield Crossroads Cultural District Committee.
“I can’t decide what I want to see the most, Daniel Day Lewis playing Bill the Butcher in ‘Gangs of New York,’ Ray Romano as Bill Buffalo in ‘The Irishman’ or Joe Pesci as Tommy Devito in ‘Goodfellas’,” said Garden Cinemas co-owner Isaac Mass. “All the characters are so well developed, these movies are like a pizza with the works.”
Scorsese is a recipient of the American Film Institute Lifetime Achievement Award. He has been honored with an Oscar, three Emmy Awards, a Grammy Award, four British Academy Film Awards, three Golden Globe Awards, and two Directors Guild of America Awards. Five of his films have been selected for preservation by the Library of Congress in the National Film Registry.
In 2019, Scorsese stirred the Hollywood pot when he claimed Marvel superhero blockbusters are “not cinema.”
The Garden Cinema owners say they believe there is room on the silver screen for different genres.
“Comic book movies like Marvel’s set up allegories to themes of human conflict and emotion that other films like Scorsese’s take head on.” said Garden Cinemas co-owner Angela Mass.
