While the pandemic has certainly taken major hold over our lives in 2020, if anything, it didn’t get in the way of some rather spectacular royal fashion moments.
During both lockdowns, the royals have been a visible force, carrying out their work, online and in-person, with just as much glamour and elegance as we’d expect.
Yes, glitzy red carpet events might have been off the cards from March, with events like Royal Ascot and Wimbledon, that are usually guaranteed to have a gaggle of royals in attendance, cancelled but there were plenty of strong sartorial choices before, during and after lockdown.
Let’s not forget Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced they were officially stepping down from their royal duties in March, but not before Meghan showcased some pretty epic outfits . How could we forget that scarlet full-length caped, red dress by Safiyaa and the bold green Emilia Wickstead frock she debuted during her final Commonwealth Day Service as a member of the Royal Family.
Just a month before Covid crisis hit the UK, we had our last big red carpet event for the BAFTA Awards, of which Prince William is a president. Kate Middleton looked resplendent in an ivory and gold Alexander McQueen gown, one that championed the sustainability dress code that encouraged guests to wear something they already owned. Kate had previously worn the dress in 2012 to attend a dinner with the King and Queen of Malaysia during a tour of Southeast Asia.
After that, there was Kate and William’s mini tour to Ireland, which fed us with some glorious emerald looks (the shimmering green Vampire’s Wife midi dress a favourite), state dinners at Buckingham Palace, charity engagements in cute masks and summer dresses even a whole Cambridge family cameo on the BBC’s Big Night in a dress, where Kate wore a dress from Ghost, which naturally sold out within minutes.
So, without further delay, we bring you some of the best royal fashion looks of 2020. Expect plenty of beautiful dresses, hats and coats galore.
