More and more new fans of Austin Butler are calling for the rising actor to win an Academy Award for his portrayal of Elvis Presley in Elvis. Directed by Baz Luhrmann, the new film chronicles the rise of the King of Rock ‘n Roll through the point of view of his manager, Colonel Tom Parker (Tom Hanks). Elvis rocked past Top Gun: Maverick to debut at No. 1 at the box office last month and its critical reception has also been rather strong.
In particular, there has been many praise given to Butler, both from critics and filmgoers. A peek at social media reveals how many fans were left blown away by the actor’s performance. One viewer of the film posted to Twitter, “i genuinely cant stop thinking about the elvis movie. it was incredible like austin butler played that role so well. he better win a million oscar awards for that acting. not to mention how gorgeous he is…”
“If Austin Butler doesn’t win the Oscar for Elvis I might have to join the ‘academy awards are a load of rubbish anyway’ camp. Absolutely stellar performance,” says another Elvis viewer.
Echoing many others, another new fan of Austin Butler stated, “saw Elvis twice and all I have to say is just give Austin Butler the damn Oscar already, the man is just that good.”
And another fan puts it, “If Austin Butler doesn’t win an Academy Award, what is even the point of the Oscars? He wasn’t even acting in this movie – the man literally BECAME Elvis.”
Austin Butler Nailed His Elvis Audition
To convincingly capture Presley’s charisma and talent would have been an immense challenge for any actor. But casting director Denise Chamian recently explained how she had a good feeling from the start about Butler, and when he tested for the role with a rendition of “Unchained Melody,” the young actor had blown away all of the other contenders for the part, including Miles Teller, Ansel Elgort, and Harry Styles.
“We did open casting calls online and even looked at Elvis impersonators, but from the very beginning, there was something about Austin to me that was a little reminiscent of Elvis. I knew he could sing, but I didn’t know how well,” Chamian said, per Variety. “He did his own recording of ‘Unchained Melody.’ He sat down at a piano. He’d had a dream about his mom who had passed away a few years ago, so there was a feeling of melancholy. He went in and just recorded it. He sent it to his agent, and his agent sent it to me.”
Chamian added, “I thought it was amazing and said we are going to hold onto this until his audition, and we’ll send this. Everyone did the same song for the test and the white suit for their final auditions. They had hair and makeup. It was a full-blown test. He’s so great in the film, and by the end, people have missed that edit from Austin’s Elvis to the real Elvis. I was blown away by his performance.”
