5 times Alia Bhatt showcased her versatility in Bollywood films
Alia Bhatt’s first lead role as an actress came in Karan Johar’s popular teenage romance drama, Student of the Year in 2012 but the actress had also done a bit role in the 1999 film, Sangharsh. In SOTY, Bhatt played the role of Shanaya – a 2012 version of Kareena Kapoor Khan’s Poo and while the film did well, many wrote her off as just another pretty face. However, over the years Bhatt has turned even the most extreme of naysayers into grudging fans because of her movie choices and acting skills.
Alia followed up her previous successes with Udta Punjab where she plays the role of Bauria, a migrant worker who dreams of being a national-level hockey player. Bhatt’s role in the movie was intense – she is captured by a gang of drug peddlers and is prostituted out to men. She is also forced to take drugs. Udta Punjab went on to win four Filmfare Awards with her winning the award for Best Actress.
Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania
Another mainstream romantic movie, Alia starred as Kavya Singh, a total firecracker. Her character in the film was highly appreciated as being a modern day Cinderella who solves her own issues. Her crackling chemistry with Varun Dhawan saw the film earn big bucks at the Box Office.
In this Meghna Gulzar directed spy thriller, Alia portrayed the role of Sehmat who is sent across enemy lines to spy for her country. The film went on to gross around â¹1.96 billion worldwide, becoming one of the highest-grossing Hindi films featuring a woman in the lead. For her portrayal of Sehmat, Bhatt won a Best Actress award at the 64th Filmfare Awards.
In an unexpected move at that time, Alia chose to star in Highway opposite Randeep Hooda. Bhatt’s portrayal of an abuse victim with Stockholm syndrome was highly appreciated and the film was a hit with the masses as well. The fact that she managed to pull off such a sensitive role at her young age was remarkable.
Again, playing against type, Alia starred as Safeena Firdausi in Gully Boy which went on to become one of the biggest cultural moments in Hindi cinema. Her romance with Ranveer Singh’s Murad and her role as the tough and supportive girlfriend was well received with her “dhoptungi” dialogue being a hit on social media.
